Which Lutron Lighting Control System Is Right for Your Home?

Comparing Two Options from the Pioneer in Lighting Control Solutions

Which Lutron Lighting Control System Is Right for Your Home?

Lighting control is one of the most sought-after smart home solutions today. The reasons are straightforward; lighting control and automation saves money, is energy efficient, and makes your home more convenient and beautiful.

While several home automation companies offer lighting control products and solutions, no company has a singular focus on it like Lutron. The company invented the solid-state dimmer in the 1950s, and since then has continued innovating in lighting control and management in both the residential and commercial markets.

As you might expect from a company focused on lighting control, Lutron makes several solutions. We have featured Lutron’s Caseta system before, a wireless system that serves as an entry point into the world of lighting control, and is best suited for smaller homes and condominiums that range up to 2,500 square feet. In this blog, we're going to focus on Lutron's higher-end solutions – RadioRA 2 and HomeWorks QS, targeted toward larger and more extensive properties.

Lutron RadioRA 2

Lutron’s RadioRA 2 system is based on wireless technology, making it easy to retrofit into existing homes, although it is just as popular for new builds. Lutron’s patented Clear Connect radio frequency technology makes for rock-solid wireless control and instant response from lighting and doesn’t depend on an internet connection, Bluetooth, or wi-fi. The RadioRA 2 system scales up from condos and apartments to homes of 7,500 square feet and can support up to 200 devices like keypads, dimmers, and switches.

While Lutron is all about lighting control, they also have other smart home solutions that all work together seamlessly. For example, the RadioRA 2 system supports up to five temperature sensors that work with their wireless thermostats. Wireless thermostats and separate sensors give you tremendous flexibility in two ways. First, your home can become more comfortable and efficient with improved temperature sensing not restricted to the thermostat's location. The wireless thermostat can be mounted in areas that aren't tied to temperature sensing for a cleaner, more aesthetically pleasing home.

Lutron’s RadioRA 2 can also integrate other smart solutions like the company’s motorized shades, garage door controls, ceiling fans controls, and more. And with the Lutron Connect Bridge, you can add smartphone, remote, and voice commands to the range of control options for your system.

Lutron HomeWorks QS

The HomeWorks QS system is Lutron's most advanced residential lighting control solution. It worlds with both wired and wireless communication to control lighting in properties that can span up to 50,000 square feet. That doesn't mean that HomeWorks QS is only for large homes; it's the flexibility of the system to work across complicated construction and properties that make it stand out.

HomeWorks QS adds wired capability and the ability to link systems across structures on a property. It does everything the RadioRA 2 systems can do and more, adding features like programmable day/night scenes and more sophisticated control sequences that can be activated by a schedule, arriving at home, occupancy sensors, and other triggers. Elegant keypads like the seeTouch series consolidate wall clutter with simple, labeled keys that can set an ambiance with lighting, temperature, window treatment control, and more.
