The Top 3 Trends to Look for in Home Theaters for 2021
Content, Sound, and Visuals Will Be Better Than Ever
The current pandemic impacted so much in 2020, and cinemas were not excepted. Major commercial cinema operators like Regal, AMC, and Cinemark have been forced to shutter locations either temporarily or permanently due to local ordinances or health concerns. At the same time, at-home video entertainment consumption increased tremendously in 2020.
As a result of these events, home theaters and media rooms have become more popular than ever. GHT Group has been Atlanta’s go-to home theater company for over 30 years, and we've seen a significant uptick in demand for upgraded home entertainment spaces. We've always kept a keen eye on the latest trends in home theater and audio-visual entertainment (it’s what we do), and we’d like to share with you some of the most significant ones we see going into 2021. Keep reading below!
First-Run Content, In Your Own Theater
On December 25, 2020, HBO Max streamed the new Wonder Woman 1984 on the service at the same time it premiered in local theaters. HBO Max and Warner Bros. films are now owned by AT&T, and they have announced that other feature films in 2021 will debut on the same day as the film hits theaters. The Disney+ streaming service did something similar for a small fee for the Mulan premiere. Both movies were offered with high-quality UHD resolution, and Dolby Vision and Atmos surround sound. Does that say there's more money in signing up streaming customers with the enticement of first-run films than in the theater revenue? We're not sure, but expect more of these kinds of deals coming on major streaming platforms. And that means that home theaters can bring the cinematic experience home, with no waiting for the latest releases!
Multi-Purpose Home Theaters
Your home theater can be the AV entertainment space of your choosing. Chances are you want to do much more than watch movies. With the Super Bowl around the corner, who doesn’t want to watch it on the best screen with immersive surround sound? What about gaming, with the next generation of consoles from Sony and Microsoft hitting the market now? What about a fun place for your teens to host a Bachelor or Bachelorette watch event (no judgment if you join them)? Your home theater can accommodate all of these, along with serious movie watching, with a plethora of options for casual seating, screens, audio systems, and smart control.
8K and IMAX
You might be thinking about why you might need 8K? You don't need it, but you might want it. 2021 will see more introductions of giant screen flat panel 8K TVs perfect for media rooms and more top-of-the-line projector options. For those that want the latest and greatest and the very best, 8K video capability will make everything sharper and more lifelike. Home theaters feature massive screens, and higher resolution does make a difference at substantial screen sizes. What about IMAX? Top-tier brands like Sony are building IMAX-Enhanced features into projectors and audio equipment that give you an even higher level of immersion by ensuring an enhanced level of video and audio performance. It's just another reason you might not ever want to go out to the movies again.
