3 Reasons to Upgrade Your High-Performance Audio Gear

Does anyone need expensive high-performance audio equipment? It would likely fit – if at all –  into Maslow’s hierarchy of needs at the highest level, self-actualization. Translating Maslow’s top motivation to audio, It’s the desire to get the best audio quality you can possibly have or afford. For enthusiasts, high-performance audio is a hobby where getting to the next level makes them happy, just like golf and other endeavors sometimes become borderline yet satisfying obsessions.

What makes an audio enthusiast excited? A new piece of gear that will add that je ne sais quoi improvement factor to his system. Let’s look at three reasons the Atlanta audio aficionado might want to upgrade a part or all of their system.

It’s Digitally Obsolete

When it comes to high-end audio, some components last decades and don't need replacement unless they wear out. Speakers are a perfect example; good transducers will last many years and may never need repairs. These inherently analog devices only need a standard amplifier connection. Unlike digital connections like USB, speaker wire can connect in various ways to a speaker, from lowly clips found in some older speakers to gold-plated bi-amp connectors. Separate amplifiers similarly have analog line-in connectors and speaker line outputs, none of which have gone out of style.

Digital technology is the one that leaps forward every few years. If you have an excellent integrated amp from some years ago, its DAC may not be compatible with today's high-resolution audio formats. Do you need high-resolution audio? Not really, but Maslow's top tier says you want it. Isn't it exciting to upgrade?

You Want Up-to-Date Aesthetics

Even though the innards may work just fine, high-performance audio components do change aesthetics. And you may have older components mixed with newer ones where the look doesn't quite jibe. Speakers also change over time, even though subtle – such as Klipsch’s Heritage line –  the changes tend to fit today’s decor and finishes better. Then there’s a matching of brands and styling. For example, Mcintosh’s classic design with the blue power meters, hefty metal knobs, and backlit front fascia make a bold statement that goes well with more McIntosh equipment.

You Want the Next Level

For most enthusiasts, an upgrade is to reach that next level of performance. Maybe it’s a more powerful amplifier to wring the last ounce of detail from their speakers, a much larger and powerful set of speakers, or the latest digital technology. It might also be convenient, as newer equipment may have better remote control and the ease of configuring and managing from an app. It's all about the audio experience, whether it's the way the system sounds, looks, or how easy it is to turn in brilliant sound in your listening room.
